PPC signs MoU with Amazon Web Services to create data centre in Western Macedonia

Public Power Corporation (PPC) announced on Thursday evening that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the development of a data centre in Western Macedonia.
The MoU provides that:

– AWS will lease the data centre upon completion of its construction, under a 15-year long-term lease, subject to customary terms.
– PPC will provide the land, buildings and supporting energy infrastructure, while AWS will install and operate the information technology (IT) infrastructure.
– In the initial phase, the data centre will have a power supply capacity of 300 MW. PPC and AWS intend to explore its further expansion, up to 1 GW, subject to mutual agreement, market conditions and the conclusion of further definitive agreements.
– AWS will purchase, and PPC will supply, electricity under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) from renewable sources, subject to customary terms, in line with Amazon’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040.

The two companies intend to explore the possibility of multi-year cooperation in cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, with the aim of supporting PPC’s digital transformation.
The MoU is binding. The project and all commercial terms, including those described above, remain subject to the negotiation and signing of definitive agreements and the fulfilment of customary conditions, including completion of due diligence, securing the required grid connection and obtaining all necessary approvals from the competent authorities.
