ZAGREB, 16 April (Hina) – The cheapest Easter consumer basket for a three-member household amounts to €122, while a more lavish one costs €435, the Independent Croatian Trade Unions (NHS) said on Wednesday, highlighting that despite discounts on most products, this year’s holiday basket is more expensive than last year.
„The vast majority of products in our holiday consumer basket were included in promotional offers. Discounts on some items reached up to 60%, yet the total value of the basket continued to rise,“ said NHS economic advisor Izabela Mišić.
This indicates that even discounted products are more expensive than they were last year and that the ongoing price increase in Croatia persists. „What used to be considered discounts – a saving for household budgets – is now merely a way to reduce the perception of price hikes,“ Mišić told the press.
This year, the more lavish basket costs €435.12 (compared to €395.55 last year), the mid-range basket €256.47 (up from €237.47 last year), and the modest basket €122.76 (compared to €116.60 last year).
Mišić said the lavish basket represents what was once considered the standard: traditional family meals with a bit more variety. The mid-range basket reflects a modest festive table, while the modest basket includes only products with government-capped prices.
The content of each basket differs in the type and quality of meat and fish, origin of the products, and the presence and quantity of various categories such as cakes, sweets, snacks, and drinks.
Mišić said the consumer basket serves as an “economic thermometer” measuring what citizens can realistically afford with their income.
The modest basket makes up 8.82%В of the average net salary of €1,392, while the lavish basket accounts for 31.26%. The share is even higher when measured against the median salary.
For a taxpayer residing in Zagreb with a minimum net wage of €754, the modest basket represents 16.27%В of their income, while the lavish one makes up 57.66%.
We live in a time when discounts have become the norm and the holiday table a luxury,“ Mišić said, adding that a discussion should be initiated about whether retailers and suppliers are willing to accept lower profit margins than they currently enjoy.ZAGREB, 16 April (Hina) – The cheapest Easter consumer basket for a three-member household amounts to €122, while a more lavish one costs €435, the Independent Croatian Trade Unions (NHS) said on Wednesday, highlighting that despite discounts on most products, this year’s holiday basket is more expensive than last year.
