The Culture Ministry is once again organising events for the August full moon this year, under the coordination of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, offering free entrance to selected archaeological sites on the night of the full moon on Saturday, 9 August 2025.
A total of 114 archaeological sites, historic sites, museums and monuments throughout the country will be open to the public under the moonlight. Events will be held in 71 archaeological sites and museums, while approximately 44 will be open to the public free of charge.
Activities will take place from August 8th to 13th, according to the programme, which includes theatrical performances, music and dance events, stargazing, myth storytelling, and guided tours. These are organised by the services of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage and the General Directorate of Restoration, Museums, and Technical Works, many of them in cooperation with local government and local associations.
National Archaeological Museum to allow free evening admission on August 9
The National Archaeological Museum in central Athens will celebrate the August full moon by granting free admission and thematic tours given by archaeologists on the night of Saturday, August 9, between 20:00 and midnight.
Visitors will be guided on tours of selected exhibits of the permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as a night-time stroll around the museum, by experts discussing various themes, including:
– “Stories of radiance and mystery: a different take on gold and amber” (Dr Konstantinos Nikolentzos, 20:00-21:00)
– “The phases of the moon in the lives of Neolithic societies” (Dr Katia Manteli, 21:15-22:00)
– “Historical walk around the National Archaeological Museum. The adventurous chronicles of two centuries in one location in the city” (Dr Konstantinos Paschalidis, meeting at the steps of the museum on Patission, 20:30 – 22:00).
The tours within the museum are for up to 20 participants. Prior booking is required at the phone number 213 214 4856. Participation is free of charge, tours are in Greek and bookings will be accepted from August 2.
Visitors can also tour the museum galleries without charge from 20:00 until midnight, with last entrance at 23:45.
