ZAGREB, 27 Sept (Hina) – On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS) pointed to the importance of maintaining competitiveness on the global market and recalled the results of the tourism sector in 2023 and the fact that Croatian tourists spend more abroad than at home.
Croatians aged 15 and above love to travel, the statistical office says, supporting this with data showing that in 2023 Croatians went on five million private multiday trips, of which 65.4% were trips within Croatia, and 34.6% were trips abroad.
When abroad, Croatians spend more than in their own country – an average of €471 as against €281, which, the DZS says, is €190 less on average.
In 2023, commercial accommodation facilities reported 92.4 million overnight stays or 2.6% more than in 2022, and the number of tourists rose by 9.7% to 19.5 million.
Most of the overnight stays – 85.3 million (92.4%) were registered in coastal regions, and most of those overnight stays were generated by foreign tourists (92.6%), with domestic tourists accounting for only 7.4% of the overnight stays.
As World Tourism Day has been observed since 1980, the DZS recalled that in 1980 the number of overnight stays in Croatia was half the 2023 figure, at 53.6 million, while the number of tourists was at 7.9 million, which is 12 million fewer tourists than in 2023.
