The Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence has unveiled the new national space programme HELLAS-SPACE 2.0, with a total budget of 350 million euros, aimed at strengthening the country’s space capabilities and satellite ecosystem.
The programme is being implemented through the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post, with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund Greece 2.0 (RRF) and in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA).
According to the ministry, HELLAS-SPACE 2.0 will serve as a key pillar of Greece’s national space strategy, covering the development of space infrastructure, the use of satellite applications and data, the strengthening of the domestic space industry, research and innovation, and the development of highly specialised human resources.
The programme includes the development of very high-resolution satellites to produce advanced geospatial data, as well as thermal imaging satellites for applications in civil protection, environmental monitoring and security.
It will also introduce new capabilities for secure satellite connectivity and positioning services for critical public and private sector operations, alongside space surveillance systems and radio-frequency emission monitoring aimed at enhancing Greece’s operational capabilities.
It also includes a space innovation and testing programme to develop new technologies and applications, secure data and service infrastructure for use by public and private sector organisations, and initiatives to support the Greek space industry, research activity and skilled workforce.
The ministry said the investments would enable the use of space technologies in areas including civil protection, disaster response, environmental monitoring, transport, precision agriculture and public administration.
The programme is expected to strengthen Greece’s participation in European and international space initiatives and contribute to the development of a stronger domestic space ecosystem focused on innovation and advanced satellite technologies.
