Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala expressed chagrin on Thursday following press reports that he is under investigation in the latest in a series of corruption probes regarding urban-planning projects in Italy’s financial capital that have rocked his administration “It’s crazy to learn from a newspaper that one is under investigation and not from the prosecutor’s office,” the centre-left first citizen said.
Sala told a meeting of his executive that he will report to the council assembly on Monday, sources said, adding that he appeared shaken by the situation.
Premier Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini’s League had demanded that he report to the assembly on Thursday.
On Wednesday prosecutors requested the arrest of six people in relation to the investigation, including Milan Urban Regeneration Chief Giancarlo Tancredi and Manfredi Catella, the founder and CEO of the Coima real-estate group.
Finance police searched Milan city hall to seize evidence as well as the homes and offices of Tancredi and Catella.
Italian ‘starchitect’ Stefano Boeri is among the people under investigation in the new probe, sources said, adding that the redevelopment of the ‘Pirellino’ building in the city is among the projects being examined.
Sources said that there are currently 74 suspects and they are accused of crimes including bribery, illegal construction and undue inducement.
Milan prosecutors said in investigation documents that Giuseppe Marinoni, who was chairman of the city’s the Landscape Commission until April, did not act independently in his position and yielded to pressure from Sala, Tancredi, Catella, Boeri.
They also alleged that sponsorship of a Marinoni project was used as “an artificial tool to cheat the rules and facilitate the start of a covert business plan to plan and implement of large building clusters, around nine suburban hubs, on the border between the city and hinterland municipalities.”
