A Board of Peace meeting will take place in Cyprus on June 30 and July 1, after a decision taken by the Board, Cyprus government’s Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said on Wednesday in statements after a meeting of the Cabinet.

Letymbiotis said that the Board of Peace has been set up to implement the reconstruction plan for Gaza on the basis of UN Resolution 2803, which the Republic of Cyprus not only welcomed but also supported from the very beginning.

He recalled that the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, had participated in the first conference for the announcement of the plan and had presented a proposal of 8 specific points based on US President Donald Trump’s plan to speed up the implementation of the reconstruction of Gaza

“The Board of Peace therefore, decided that this conference will take place in our country. The Republic of Cyprus is neither a co-host nor an organizer of course of this event,” he said.

The Spokesperson noted that it is of high significance that the administrative arm of this Board has chosen Cyprus, “a country which has proven in practice how beneficial it has been and how many initiatives it has taken and the effectiveness of these initiatives in terms of humanitarian support to civilians in Gaza.”

Responding to a question about the level of participation, Letymbiotis said that there will be some officials in Cyprus who have requested and will have meetings with Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos. He repeated that it is positive that Cyprus was chosen for this meeting and pointed out that the Republic of Cyprus has stated many times that despite the developments in the region, the reconstruction project for Gaza should never escape out attention.

The Republic of Cyprus can actively participate in this project when the reconstruction of Gaza begins via the President’s 8-point proposal, he concluded.
