Sarajevo joins the UN Global Campaign for Road Safety

SARAJEVO, July 17 (FENA) – The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Road Safety Jean Todt presented today in Sarajevo the UN Global Campaign for Road Safety with the aim of raising public awareness of measures that can reduce the number of deaths in traffic by 2030.

Todt specified that traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for young people between five and twenty-five years of age and that every year 1.2 million people die in traffic accidents, while between 40 and 50 million get seriously injured.

“I call it a silent pandemic because it is not talked about enough and we have solutions for it in the form of education, communication, stricter law enforcement, vehicle quality control, but also road quality and care for those injured in traffic accidents,” said Todt.

He added that traffic accidents are a burden on survivors, their families and the entire society, with an estimated loss of around five percent of GDP.

The Resident Coordinator of the UN in BiH Ingrid Macdonald said that BiH has twice the number of victims of traffic accidents than EU member states, which must be reduced in order for the country to progress on the European path.

It was announced that tonight, on the facade of the Eternal Flame building, there will be a digital projection of the UN Global Campaign for Road Safety, which will be launched in more than 80 countries.
