Greece, as an active member of the UN Security Council, played an active role and supported the US plan for Gaza with its positive vote, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochiou said at a regular briefing for diplomatic correspondents. The UN Security Council approved the plan on Monday night.
This is a “historic opportunity to make the ceasefire sustainable,” she said, noting that “Greece seeks to be actively present in Gaza both in the humanitarian sector and in reconstruction.”
The priority at this stage is the channeling of humanitarian aid and the reform of the Palestinian Authority.
Referring to Greece’s initiative for a multilateral 5 times 5 format of coastal countries in the region: Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Turkiye and Libya, Zochiou stressed that “it is a purely Greek initiative.”
These countries have been chosen because they share maritime borders with Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean and common challenges, she pointed out and added that “Greece’s goal is to create an environment of stability in a field that used to be one of competition and tension.”
