Zemmour’s party joins Meloni-led group at EP

Controversial far-right French politician Eric Zemmour’s Reconquete party on Wednesday joined the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group led by Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni.

Announcing the move, ECR Co-President Nicola Procaccini welcomes Zemmour and said the ECR was also “working well” with the rightwing Italian League party and Marine Le Pen’s National Rally, both members of the Identity and Democracy (ID) caucus, but had “difficulty finding common points” with Alternative for Germany (AfD), the other main ID member.

Procaccini also said the ECR was “collaborating very well” with the centrist Renew Europe party, specially on the ongoing ‘tractor protests’ across Europe.

But Renew Europe slammed the ECR-Reconquete tie-up saying “a new Frankenstein alliance of the extreme right is the recipe for a European nightmare”.

Reconquete is also led by Le Pen’s niece Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, from whom the National Rally leader split.
