UN expert to assess Montenegrin judiciary system independence

The UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers Margaret Satterthwaite will start her official visit to Montenegro on Tuesday, to assess the independence of the judiciary.

According to the UN, Satterrthwaite will pay the official visit to Montenegro in the period from 19 to 26 September 2023.

She will assess the measures taken by the Government to ensure the independence of the judiciary and the free exercise of the legal profession.

According to the press statement, Satterthwaite will examine the judiciary reform process to assess its compliance with international human rights standards, such as the independence of the judiciary and the principle of separation of powers.

The UN announced that she would meet government officials and members of the Parliament, judges, prosecutors and lawyers, as well as the representatives of civil society, academia, UN agencies, donors and the diplomatic community.

Satterthwaite is to present her report to the Human Rights Council in June next year.
