Readers of National Geographic Travel Magazine name Sarajevo as the best destination in the world
Sarajevo has won this year’s National Geographic Travel Readers’ Choice Awards in the category of “Best of the World 2025”. Alongside the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the finalists included Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam), New Orleans (USA), Bodrum (Turkey), and Cuzco (Peru), announced the Sarajevo Canton Tourism Board.
“Whether walking labyrinthine streets to find bazaars, mosques, and basement bars, or explore its Olympic mountains, Sarajevo’s rich history extends beyond the shadows of the 20th century,” National Geographic Travel magazine published in its description, inviting readers to visit Sarajevo in 2025.
“With its centuries-old history woven into natural beauty, it’s no wonder this cosmopolitan capital is so beloved. Plan a trip to explore local markets, stroll along the Miljacka River and its numerous bridges, and enjoy the stunning views the city offers,” the magazine states.
According to the SC Tourism Board, this recognition is yet another indicator that Sarajevo is indeed an attractive tourist destination, increasingly drawing visitors from around the world year after year and justifying its image as a regional center of history, culture, and entertainment.
“We are happy, proud, and extremely satisfied with the choice of readers of the prestigious National Geographic Travel magazine, which has positioned Sarajevo at the top of global tourist destinations for 2025,” emphasized the Sarajevo Canton Tourism Board.
They noted that achieving this victory in this year’s voting required significant investment, effort, and a bit of luck.
“This selection shows that tourists can recognize good people, the wonderful atmosphere in the city, the unique blend of history, culture, and coexistence, beautiful nature, and authentic gastronomy. This is a tremendous boost for us to continue working harder and better, to meet the expectations of all who believe that Sarajevo is a city worth visiting next year,” the Board stated.
