During the discussion on the European Union’s Strategic Agenda at the informal European Council in Granada on Friday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that geopolitical parameters should not be allowed to supersede accession criteria in the process of EU enlargement, stressing that the European Commission must be objective when assessing the performance of candidate states, sources reported.
“We stand firm as regards respect for the rule of law,” he said.
He also said that the progress achieved by the EU during the pandemic, with the Recovery and Resilience Fund and in energy issues should be acknowledged.
As Mitsotakis noted, “we must first recognise our geopolitical position ourselves,” while adding that much remains to be done.
