MFA on multilateral initiative: Greece, a pillar of stability, has consistently supported regional cooperation

Diplomatic sources, referring to the multilateral initiative involving a group of states coordinating on issues such as maritime zones, which Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis mentioned in Parliament, stressed that “ Greece is a pillar of stability and security in Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The same sources, citing the Prime Minister’s foreign policy speech in Parliament, noted that “ he referred to the initiative that Greece intends to undertake for a meeting of coastal countries in our region. Greece has always supported trilateral and multilateral regional cooperation schemes with countries facing common challenges. This is more necessary than ever, given the major geopolitical upheavals of the current situation.”

The same sources also said that “ the proposal for a 5×5 multilateral group of states includes five countries and five thematic areas. It involves Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey, and Libya and focuses on migration, protection of the marine environment, connectivity, maritime zoning, and civil protection. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs will explore the feasibility and prospects of such a format and assess to what extent it could be a permanent mechanism.”

They concluded: “ Greece is a pillar of stability and security in Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. In a spirit of understanding and guided by international law, we are pursuing peace and prosperity in our region. Greece is self-confident, with a strong international and regional diplomatic presence, a robust economy, and capable armed forces.”
