Koopman: We want hundreds of millions in new investments in Montenegro

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Prime Minister Milojko Spajic and Director General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Gert Jan Koopman have agreed that the development potential of Montenegro is enormous, and the European Union (EU) would like to invest hundreds of millions of euros in the country.

On the first day of his visit to Montenegro, Koopman led a European Commission (EC) delegation that discussed models for accelerating innovation and attracting foreign investment to boost Montenegro’s economic development with government representatives.

According to a press release issued by the Government, they agreed that the focus of joint activities in the near future should be on transport, renewable energy, IT, and agriculture, with a particular emphasis on attracting new European investors in these sectors.

Koopman stated that it was necessary to leverage all of Montenegro’s advantages and develop a more efficient system for attracting foreign investments as soon as possible.

“Montenegro is a future EU member. We would like to see several hundred million euros invested in your country, and this must be our common focus,” Koopman said.

Spajic presented the reform processes and informed the counterparts about the details of the Fiscal Strategy, aimed at making Montenegro a more competitive and attractive investment destination.

“We have a clear plan and want visible results. With the EU as our most important partners our success is guaranteed,” Spajic stated.

The Government also mentioned that the meeting addressed the challenges facing Montenegro and emphasized the need for stronger integration of the private and public sectors to strengthen institutional support for the economy and overall development.

A joint investment conference between Montenegro and the European Union has been scheduled for next year.

The talks between the EC delegation and the Montenegrin Government will resume tomorrow in Budva.
