ZAGREB, 23 Aug (Hina) – The Primorje-Gorski Kotar County police on Friday arrested 13 persons for staging a protest rally at the LNG terminal in Omišalj, on the island of Krk, as an LNG tanker was about to dock at the terminal. The protesters did not have any ID on them and the police are investigating the case.
According to media reports, the protesters are an international group of environmental activists who early on Friday morning sailed out and for hours prevented the LNG tanker from docking at the Omišalj terminal. The activists say they are against the planned increase in the capacity of the LNG terminal on Krk and the fossil fuel industry.
The local police said they received a report shortly before 4 a.m. about several persons being at sea in kayaks close to the LNG terminal, as a tanker was approaching it.
According to another report, the persons were planning to climb onto the tanker, while terminal employees and security guards were trying to prevent them.
The police found several persons at the scene but could not determine their identity as they did not have any ID on them, which was why 13 were arrested.
During the arrest, one person put up passive resistance and the police had to carry them away.
An investigation is underway due to suspected unlawful activity.
The police had to call in the emergency medical service to help one person but it was not the person who had put up passive resistance.
