On Saturday morning, at 10:30 local time, President Christodoulides will receive the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for the Cyprus issue, Maria Angela Holguin, who is returning to the island after her recent reappointment by the UNSG.
On Monday, May 26th, Holguin will meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, according to diplomatic sources who spoke to the Cyprus News Agency.
After the contacts with the leaders, the Secretary-General’s personal envoy will make statements to the press and, according to sources, will provide information about her program and her next steps.
So far it is not clear whether she will see the two leaders a second time during her presence on the island from 24 to 31 May. But sources said that this will also be determined by the outcome of her contacts.
As announced yesterday by the UN, Holguin will be in Cyprus from 24 to 31 May, in order to meet with the leaders, their representatives, as well as with other parties involved in the Cyprus problem.
She plans to have contacts with all three guarantor powers, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, but it is not yet known when these meetings will take place nor whether she plans to also meet with Johannes Hahn, who has recently been appointed as the Special Envoy of the President of the European Commission for the Cyprus problem.
The Cyprus problem will be the focus of a meeting between President Christodoulides and the British Prime Minister in London at 7:30 Cyprus time today. The latest developments were also discussed yesterday by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York.
President Christodoulides recently expressed the readiness of the Greek Cypriot side to continue the effort to resume peace negotiations and said that he is fully prepared for the meeting with Holguin.
The Greek Cypriot side’s negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, also stated in a recent interview with Haravgi daily that despite the obstacles that still exist due to the positions of the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot sides, the Greek Cypriot side is investing in the arrival of the UN personal envoy.
