Advancement of Women in Sports “Unites” the Ministry of Sports and Federations

Although there are often disagreements, such as on categorization or budget allocation, what is uniting the Ministry of Sports (MKRS) and the Sports Federations is the goal of advancing women and girls in sports. In the signing of memoranda, MKRS obliges federations to dedicate 30 percent of their budget to women and girls, a decision that is welcomed by the heads of the federations.

The Deputy Minister of Sports, Daulina Osmani, stated to KosovaPress that this decision is closely linked to the global cause for gender equality.

The Secretary of the Handball Federation, Muhamet Arifi, told KosovaPress that this federation already has about 48 percent women in the entire community involved in handball in Kosovo. However, there are those who recommend that the percentage of the federations’ budgets dedicated to women should be much higher. Nazmi Gashi, the Secretary of the Karate Federation, says that considering the great results achieved by girls in sports, this budget should be up to 70 percent.

It should be noted that Kosovo has won gold and silver medals, as well as Balkan, European, and World Championships in sports like judo, boxing, and karate, thanks to the achievements of women.
