“Sleeping Nymph” painting by Nicolae Grigorescu sells for 300,000 euros

The painting ‘Nimfa dormind’ [Sleeping Nymph] by Nicolae Grigorescu has been sold for 330,000 euros at the spring auction organized on Thursday by Artmark.

The painting, also called ‘The Great Nude,’ comes from the collection of former banker Ernest Goodwin, director of the Banque du Roumanie at the beginning of the 20th century. The work, classified in the Treasure category of the National Movable Cultural Heritage, was initially estimated at 100,000 – 200,000 euros.

Among the other works purchased at high prices were: ‘Privirea stramosilor’ [The Look of the Ancestors] by Ion Tuculescu, sold for 99,000 euros, ‘Ulcior cu tufanele’ [Jug with Bushes] by Stefan Luchian, sold for 50,000 euros, ‘Intimitate’ [Intimacy] by Nicolae Tonitza, sold for 34,000 euros, ‘Interior cu tufanele’ [Interior with Bushes], by Theodor Pallady, sold for 30,000 euros, ‘Muza pamfletarului’ [The Pamphleteer’s Muse] (study) by Nicolae Tonitza and ‘Portret de evreu’ [Portrait of a Jew] by Nicolae Grigorescu, each sold for 24,000 euros.
