Using domestic means and capabilities, Turkish defense giant Aselsan has developed Türkiye’s first-ever homegrown over-the-horizon anti-submarine warfare sonar called the Low Frequency Towed Active Sonar System, or Dufas.
The firm unveiled the system in a statement commemorating Monday’s 109th anniversary of the Turkish victory in the Canakkale (Gallipoli) campaign, saying that the project was carried out with the leadership of Türkiye’s Defense Industry Agency to meet the needs of the Turkish Naval Forces.
The new system boasts state-of-the-art technology, such as active and passive sonar and omni-directional transmission capabilities.
“By monitoring ambient noise in passive sonar mode, it detects underwater threats such as torpedoes, and it engages countermeasure equipment when a torpedo threat is detected, eliminating risks,” said the firm.
The new systems’ technical features reduce considerably the threat enemy submarines pose to the Turkish navy, said Aselsan.
