Skopje, 28 May 2024 (MIA) — Curated by Susanne Weiß, Inka Gressel, and Jovanka Popova, an exhibitio_nFocused on fabrics in art will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art at 8 pm.
According to the MoCA in a press release, the touring exhibition is organized by the German Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen. It explores the inherent meanings and messages in fabrics, their cultural significance as well as traditional textile techniques used by artists.
“In a political climate marked by detachment and cruelty, textiles hold the power to evoke reminiscences of earlier heartfelt humane times, to remind us how precious handcrafts are, to call to compassion and solidarity,” the release says.
“In 1965, Bauhaus artist Anni Albers described ‘the event of a thread’ as something multilinear, without beginning or end: more broadly, it signifies constant scope to rethink relations and to restructure connections and contexts,” the release says.
The exhibit features an installation by Judith Raum titled ‘The Bauhaus Space,’ dedicated to the Bauhaus weaving workshop.
It also includes works by Ulla von Brandenburg, Kristina Bozurska, Jane Chalovski and Hristina Ivanoska, Noa Eshkol, Andreas Exner, Uli Fischer, Zille Homma Hamid, Heide Hinrichs, Olaf Holzapfel, Christa Jeitner, Elisa van Joolen & Vincent Vulsma, Jovan Josifovski, Eva Meyer & Eran Schaerf, Karen Michelsen Castañón, Judith Raum, Franz Erhard Walther, Zorica Zafirovska and Klelija Zivkovic as well as artworks borrowed from the MoCA Skopje collection by Sonja Dimitrova, Dimche Koco, Jolanta Owidska, Ismet Ramicevic, Lisa Rehsteiner, Mira Spirovska, Dushko Stojanovski, and Patricia Velasco Wallin.
“The Event of a Thread: Global Narratives in Textiles” was supported by the German Embassy, the Goethe Institut, and Tikvesh. It will be open through Sept. 2.
