Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday hailed the two-week truce between the United States and Iran and said Italy would do its bit for peace.
United States President Donald Trump has said he will extend by two weeks his ultimatum for Tehran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face civilisational wipe-out.
“The two-week suspension of fighting, in the pursuit of a desirable agreement, is certainly a very positive development.
We are always working toward a peaceful solution to this conflict,” Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tajani said in a live broadcast on TG5.
“It’s good news for the civilian population of Iran, it’s good news for the civilian populations in the Gulf region, it’s positive news for the Israeli population.
“And also for our economy. The price of oil is already falling below $100, and this is also a breath of fresh air for our economy, because unfortunately, a surge in energy prices would have been a severe blow to our economy.
“Now we hope that these two weeks will turn into a period of agreements.
“Iran rightly cannot have a nuclear bomb,” Tajani added, “which would pose a danger to the entire region.
“It’s a good thing the Americans are no longer bombing civilians, and therefore a negotiated solution is the best possible one, which we support along with all the European Union countries, so they are willing to support all actions that can help stop the war. Let’s see what happens in Lebanon, because there too, it seems to me, the situation is rather complicated.” Tajani added that Italy is doing its part to secure agreement, and the Iranian ambassador would have talks at the Farnesina, Italy’s foreign ministry, later Wednesday.
“The two-week suspension of fighting is very positive,” he wrote on X.
“It’s good news that moves toward a peace agreement, for the civilian population, for the region, and for Israel, but also for our economy, with oil prices already falling below $100, thus avoiding energy price spikes.
“A breath of fresh air for our system.
“Italy will also continue to do its part to finalize the agreements in the next two weeks,” he added.
“The Director of Political Affairs at the Farnesina will meet with the Iranian ambassador to Italy today.
“Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, and it is a good thing the US does not bomb the civilian population,” Tajani wrote. “A negotiated solution is crucial to bringing peace and stability. We support it along with the entire European Union.”
