President and UN senior official discuss ways to resume Cyprus talks

The UN Secretary will use all his good offices to help the process to find a peaceful solution to the Cyprus issue,  UN Assistant Secretary – General, Miroslav Jenča said after his meeting on Monday morning at the Presidential Palace with President Nikos Christodoulides.

The meeting lasted one hour and 20 minutes. Jenča said he discussed with Christodoulides ways to resume the talks.

He thanked President Christodoulides for a very good meeting. “We covered many topics. The most important that I would mention is that the Secretary – General remains paying utmost attention to the situation on the island,” he added.

Jenča noted that he discussed with Christodoulides ways on how to resume the talks. “This is something that is of importance, to see the big picture and definitely the Secretary – General will use all his good offices to help this process to find a peaceful solution on the island, to the Cyprus issue,” he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
