Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro will not accept migrants from Great Britain, Prime Minister Milojko Spajic’s office announced, emphasizing that the country remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under the European integration process and respecting international law.

The announcement came in response to the statement made by President Jakov Milatovic, who had expressed concern over Spajic’s remark that the government was ready to consider accepting migrants returned from the United Kingdom, in exchange for investments from that country.

Spajic’s office said that Milatovic’s statement is part of an obvious disinformation campaign aimed at spreading fake news and causing panic.

“The Cabinet of the Prime Minister considers it its duty to inform the public that Montenegro will not, under any circumstances, accept migrants from Great Britain”, the press release states.

The press release adds that, as a future EU member state, Montenegro remains committed to respecting all obligations arising from the European integration process and respect for international law, including the matters of migration.

“The President’s (Milatovic’s) statements, apart from causing damage to institutional stability, do not contribute to maintaining good and friendly relations between Montenegro and the Republic of Turkey or Great Britain, and it is particularly concerning that they may lead to diplomatic misunderstandings”, the Cabinet stated.
