The average number of days per year that Italy’s 21 regional capitals had maximum temperatures of 25° C or higher rose to 114 in the 2006-2023 period, up from 101 in the 1981-2010 period, Istat said on Friday in a report on the impact of climate change here.

It said the average number of tropical nights, in which the temperature does not dip below 20°, increased from 38 to 49.

Istat said the average temperature of both the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas had risen by over 1°, showing how the Mediterranean is “an area of particular climate vulnerability”.

The report also compared European capitals.

It said the average temperature in central Rome has risen by about 3° since the early 1980s, while it has risen by about 2° in Berlin, Madrid and Paris.
