Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is a safe haven for people forced to leave their homes, Minister of Internal Affairs Danilo Saranovic and acting UNHCR Representative to Montenegro Stefanie Krause have agreed.
Saranovic said that Montenegro has been for decades recognized as a country with its doors wide open for refugees seeking haven from war-torn areas.
“Just as we sheltered of tens of thousands of refugees from the region in the 1990s, we also opened our borders for citizens of Ukraine”, Saranovic said.
He thanked UNHCR for their support for the institutions in Montenegro, primarily the Ministry of the Interior.
Krause welcomed MUP efforts in the area of refugee policy, as well as towards those seeking international protection – asylum.
According to the press release, she emphasized the importance of Montenegro’s compliance with the EU foreign and security policy in providing temporary protection for the Ukrainian citizens.
