Montenegro committed to CoE standards

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro’s commitment to reforms in the rule of law is evident, Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE) Alain Berset said during a meeting with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic.

According to a press release from the President’s office, this is the first visit by the head of that institution to Montenegro since the restoration of independence in 2006.

“Berset pointed out that Montenegro’s commitment to reforms in of ​​the rule of law is evident, that the CoE takes these efforts seriously and is committed to strengthening cooperation and all forms of support to our country”, the press release said.

The two officials agreed that, given the events and challenges on the geopolitical stage, it is important for CoE to demonstrate leadership through its decisions and positions in guiding democratic processes important for the unity of Europe as a community of values ​​and the stability of the European continent.

Milatovic said that Montenegro, as a member of that important organization, shares the standards and principles of promoting and protecting human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and recognizes them as priorities in international and national activities.

He pointed out that cooperation with CoE is one of the important foreign policy priorities.

“We look forward to strengthening cooperation in the coming period, especially in the context of our main foreign policy goal – the EU membership by 2028, but also the upcoming Montenegrin chairmanship of the CoE Committee of Ministers, from November until May 2027”, the press release said.
