President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine Tassoulas attended Saturday’s celebration for the 82nd anniversary of the liberation of Kastellorizo island, held by the Municipality of Megisti.
Tassoulas attended a celebratory liturgy at the Church of Aghii Konstantinou kai Elenis and laid a wreath at the Monument of the Fallen.
In his statements after the wreath-laying ceremony, the Greek president referred to the liberation of Kastellorizo, the first on Greek territory during World War II after Italy’s capitulation, and the welcoming of residents to the sailing into the port of the destroyer ‘Navarchos Kountouriotis’ on the same day, September 13, 1943.
Tassoulas then paid a visit to the missile boat ‘Daniolos’. He then visited the islet of Ro, laying a wreath at the monument of the late and iconic “Lady of Ro” (Despina Achladioti), and visited the island’s military outpost. The latter was inaugurated in May after a gift by the Greek Parliament while Tassoulas was house speaker.
