Greece to have double railway line from Piraeus to Thessaloniki in 11 months, Kyranakis says

Greece will have a double railway line from Piraeus to Thessaloniki in 11 months, Alternate Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis said on Wednesday at the 8th ITC 2025 Infrastructure and Transport Conference, held at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre.

As Kyranakis noted, “we have laid the foundations for major changes, and soon the training of train drivers on the ETCS system will begin, aiming to have a fully functional automatic braking system on the railway.”

He also highlighted that safety measures are being put in place, allowing an operations center to monitor trains with centimeter-level precision. In addition, he mentioned efforts to reinforce the human resources at Hellenic Railways by recruiting Greeks from abroad, with 300 applications currently under evaluation. “This is a unique opportunity for Greek railways to acquire expertise from abroad,” he said.

According to Kyranakis, safety and passenger experience are top priorities. He also noted ongoing projects for the renovation of stations in Athens and Thessaloniki, suburban railway improvements, and the expansion of the railway network.

Furthermore, he mentioned interest from the company, Levante Train, in operating services in the Western Peloponnese.
