Government employment up by 4.8% in first half of 2024

A 4.8% increase was recorded in Government employment in the first half of 2024, compared to the corresponding period of 2023, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

In June 2024, it said, total government employment reached 54.153 persons. For the period January – June 2024 average total government employment reached 54.721 persons, marking an increase of 2.524 persons (4.8%) compared to the corresponding period of 2023.

In the Civil Service, it said, there were 12.004 permanent employees, 4.243 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.265 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.856 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51.4%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (5.4%), it adds.

As regards the Educational Service, there were 11.890 permanent employees, 1.193 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 3.768 employees with contracts of definite duration and 148 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (69.9%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0.9%).

In Security Forces, according to the data, there were 8.123 permanent employees, 4.617 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 299 employees with contracts of definite duration and 747 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (58.9%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2.2%).
