“Greece currently possesses an extremely significant geopolitical asset which it can make use of, if it considers that its national interests are being affected. I want to be clear: there will be no concessions on our national rights and interests,” Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis stressed on Friday, responding to a question raised by MP Alexandros Kazamias of the Plefsi Eleftherias party regarding the risk of a Turkish law, through which Ankara strengthens its projection of unlawful claims in the Aegean.

“It is self-evident, and I wish to state this in the clearest possible terms, that unilateral actions in the field of the law of the sea do not produce law, nor do they create faits accomplis. This, of course, does not negate the fact that it is the obligation of the Greek government and the Greek state not to become complacent, to keep all available instruments actively at its disposal and to maintain all the channels it has. It is self-evident that issues concerning peace and security in the Eastern Mediterranean are fully known to our partners and allies, as well as to international organizations. I wish to be absolutely clear that these issues, and while the content of the proposed bill is not yet known, must be handled with exceptional seriousness, sound judgment, and above all with knowledge and competence, and that we must avoid creating impressions out of nothing,” said the foreign minister.
