Prilep, 5 June 2026 (MIA) – The 60th Vojdan Chernodrinski Macedonian Theatre Festival opens Friday in Prilep with the performance of “Cat’s Head”, produced by the Skopje’s Drama Theatre, and an opening ceremony in which lifetime achievement awards will be presented.

To mark the milestone, an exhibition will open also today to showcase the festival’s path from its beginnings in 1965.

The exhibit will serve as a sort of a time machine of the Vojdan Cernodrinski theatre festival, said Ana Stojanoska, the festival’s director.

“It is a hybrid show, both digital and analogue, in the spirit of this year’s festival’s motto ‘Brave New Theatre’. We will present artefacts from the festival’s history across five points in the town, starting from the building of the National Theatre,” she stated.

Theatre artists Atila Klinche, Sasho Milenkovski, Ljubomir Chadikovski and Vebi Kerimi will receive their lifetime achievement awards at the opening ceremony at 8 pm.

Ten plays will vie for awards, with the first one, “Cat’s Head” – written by Venko Andonovski and directed by Dejan Projkovski, being performed after the ceremony.

The festival, which runs through June 12, will also feature promotions and panels.

This year’s auteur in focus is playwright Dejan Dukovski. In his honor, his latest work “Black Gold”, produced by the Belgrade Drama Theater, will be performed at the Prilep festival.
