Fair employment is a central priority of the Cyprus EU Presidency, Minister says at UN Summit
Fair employment is a central priority of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, Minister of Labor and Social Insurance Marinos Mousiouttas has said at the 64th Session of the Committee for Social Development that takes place at the United Nations headquarters, in New York.
According to an official press release, in the context of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Minister represented the EU and its Member States, delivering a Joint Declaration.
During the Summit, the Minister also delivered a national declaration, where he stressed the importance of social justice, solidarity and equality, highlighting Cyprus’ commitment to full and decent employment.
He referred to the challenges posed by the green and digital transitions, demographic change and the rapid evolution of the labour market, underlining the role of social dialogue in the adoption of reforms and strengthening trust between government, workers and employers.
It is noted that in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, Cyprus is promoting the “Fair Employment for Social Justice” initiative, strengthening social justice, child well-being, the participation of older people and the inclusion of people with disabilities, he said.
Moreover, he stressed that fair employment is a central priority of the Cyprus Presidency, underlining the need for policies that promote equality, social inclusion and decent work, in line with the European Pillar of Social Rights and the long-standing commitment of the International Labour Organization to social justice.
He called on participants to focus on implementing commitments that deliver measurable results for young people and workers most affected by inequalities.
Referring to Cyprus, he said that in a labor market that is rapidly transforming due to digitalization, artificial intelligence and the green transition, Cyprus is promoting policies that leverage technological developments to improve the quality of work, reduce inequalities and support just transitions.
During his participation in the Social Summit in New York, the Minister also had bilateral contacts with his counterparts and with relevant institutional bodies.
