Cattle and sheep numbers decline

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to preliminary data from Monstat, the livestock population saw a decline last year compared to 2023 in the total number of cattle, sheep, and goats.

“The total number of cattle stands at 67,500, which is a decrease of 1.9 percent compared to the last year. The downward trend in the number of dairy cows continues, with a drop of 6.7 percent,” the Statistical Office stated in a press release.

Compared to the last year, sheep farming saw a decrease of 6.6 percent in total headcount, while the number of goats declined by 7.3 percent.

“The total number of pigs increased by 20.8 percent year on year, reaching 29,270,” the press release states.

The total poultry population grew by 24.9 percent last year.

“The largest share was held by laying hens, whose total number reached 1.02 million, which is 26.7 percent more than last year,” the press release concluded.
