The support of the United States of America for Romania was essential in many crossroads moments, President Nicusor Dan said on July 16, as he participated in the opening at the National Museum of History of Romania (MNIR) of the exhibition “USA-Romania. History, diplomacy and the road to democracy.”
The exhibition is dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the U.S.Declaration of Independence
Dan said in a social media post that the United States of America enjoys a deep appreciation in Romania, and this exhibition offers the public the opportunity to discover the archival documents that are the basis of a solid relationship, built on common values, on a commitment to democracy and on the will to respond together to the challenges and threats we have faced over time.
In the 146 years of diplomatic ties, Romania and the U.S. have built a partnership based on common ideals, values and interests in the political, economic and security fields, he said.
“The United States’ support for Romania was essential at many crossroads. In the transition period after the fall of the communist regime, this support contributed decisively to Romania’s reintegration with the family of Western democracies. Today we defend freedom and democracy together. Romania is one of the most reliable allies and partners of the United States in the Black Sea region and on NATO’s eastern flank, and our priority is to promote our strategic partnership to a new level of ambition, which will fully capitalise on the potential of bilateral cooperation and existing strategic opportunities, to the benefit of our citizens,” the Romanian President said.
In his speech at the opening, Dan noted that among the exhibits is a letter dated November 20, 1880, by which the American president confirmed to Prince Carol the recognition of Romania’s independence.
“Romania and the United States, as has been said, have a common history, not linear, but almost linear if we look at actions and, of course, convergent in terms of values, both in the past, and especially now. In the contemporary era, we have a strategic partnership, I remind you, July 1997, with President Clinton’s visit to Bucharest,” the president pointed out.
The head of the state said that currently the Romania-U.S. Strategic Partnership is “more solid than ever”, both bilaterally and in terms of participation in multilateral formats, the most recent example being the NATO Summit in Ankara.
“We have reaffirmed those values and principles in which we believe: a rules-based international order, a NATO Alliance that is defensive and determined to defend each of its members, and, of course, a partnership with extremely interesting prospects in the years to come – obviously, in the area of security, which is the main global concern, but also in the area of economic exchanges.”
Dan added that in the strategic partnership “there is a huge potential that many people here are working on to become a reality”, and also noted that the exhibition at MNIR shows that “trust is built brick by brick, in order to give the possibility of concrete things, which bring peace and prosperity to the people.”
