Podgorica, (MINA) – Nearly 90 percent of young people in Montenegro believe that human rights are not equally accessible to all citizens, while 72.8 percent of them identify women victims of violence as the most vulnerable marginalized group, according to a survey carried out by NGOs LGBT Forum Progress and Social Center.
According to the press release from the LGBT Forum Progres, the research “From knowledge to action: Attitudes of young people on activism and human rights in Montenegro” was carried out as part of the project “Changes start with young people!”, financially supported by the Ministry of Sports and Youth.
The findings reveal that as many as 74.3 percent of young people believe that activism can improve the state of human rights in Montenegro, which shows that young people recognize the importance of civic engagement despite the obstacles.
“An alarming 87 percent of respondents believe that human rights are not equally accessible to all citizens of Montenegro, indicating the perception of inequality in Montenegrin society”, the press release reads.
The results also show that the majority of young people have only basic or partial knowledge of human rights, while nearly a third – 30.2 percent, believe that they are poorly or not informed at all.
According to them, a particularly concerning result is that as many as 86 percent of young people express a strong mistrust in the media’s objectivity when reporting on human rights, while 74 percent believe that state institutions are not doing enough to protect human rights.
