ZAGREB, 29 Oct (Hina) – Climate transition could become a driver of sustainable growth for Croatia’s economy, it was said on Wednesday at the presentation of the World Bank’s Country Climate and Development Report and the advantages of low-carbon and climate-resilient growth in Croatia.
The report analyses the impact of climate change on development, growth, poverty reduction and inequality. It examines how climate change and global decarbonisation affect Croatia’s development and priorities, highlighting key areas for improving resilience, adaptation and mitigation.
Environmental Protection and Green Transition Minister Marija Vuković said that climate policies are crucial for the long-term competitiveness of the Croatian economy.
“Croatia has recognised the importance of the green transition and climate investments as an opportunity for economic growth and new jobs,” she said.
“Accelerated decarbonisation across all sectors is essential for sustainable and competitive development. In the context of a socially just transition, we are preparing the implementation of the Social Climate Fund for Croatia, worth €1.68 billion, which will be used to assist vulnerable households, microenterprises, and transport users during the green transition,” Vuković added.
Primorac: Climate change both a risk and an opportunity
Finance Minister Marko Primorac emphasised that climate change brings both risks and opportunities for the economy and that investments in resilience and innovation will determine Croatia’s future development.
“Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue, but an economic one. Croatia must invest in protection against climate risks, while also seizing new growth opportunities through energy efficiency, infrastructure modernisation and private-sector innovation,” Primorac said.
He added that the World Bank report confirms that Croatia has exceptional natural resources and significant potential to develop a low-carbon economy.
At the same time, it was noted that climate-related risks are becoming increasingly evident, with the coast, agriculture, energy and tourism among the most exposed sectors.
With determination, vision and coordinated action, Croatia can achieve its climate and development goals. The World Bank Group stands ready to support Croatia on its path toward a sustainable future, said Sameh Naguib Wahba, Regional Director for Sustainable Development at the World Bank’s Europe and Central Asia region.
