Works at Larnaka marina to be completed December, says Minister

Deepening works at Larnaka marina are progressing and expected to be completed in December according to the contract term, with a budget of 900 thousand euros, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeades said on Thursday.

In statements to the press the Minister also said that final decisions on the future development of the marina and the port will be made after the recommendations of experts and consultations with local authorities and bodies.

He explained that the works include the removal of sand and algae from the seabed which are stacked on a vessel and transported to a sea area indicated by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.

The Minister noted that the works provide for a smooth entry and exit to the marina and this will essentially provide additional security to all users.

He also said that the floating platform – dock wil be repaired.

Asked about the strike by the customs officers, Vafeades said that they are raising issues managed by the Customs Department and do not fall under the responsibility of the Ministry.

But he went on to say that our ports must operate effectively.
