UPCG appeals for abolition of Sunday work ban

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – The Employers’ Federation (UPCG) has once again appealed for the abolition of the Sunday work ban in order to accommodate the needs of both the business sector and tourists, without undermining workers’ rights.

“UPCG once again publicly appeals to the Government and all political stakeholders to consider, with understanding and without prejudice, the need to amend the Law on Domestic Trade, which has prohibited wholesale and retail trade on Sundays and public holidays since 2019,” the UPCG stated in a press release.

According to the press release, the lifting of the Sunday work ban should not be seen as a threat to workers, but as a necessary measure that would contribute to a more responsible and realistic functioning of the market, the development of tourism, and the improvement of the business environment.

“It is important to highlight that even before this ban was adopted, most shops in Montenegro were not open on Sundays, nor would they be obligated to be so in the future. The decision would be left to employers themselves, who could, based on their business assessments, decide whether Sunday work is worthwhile,” said the UPCG.

UPCG added that this applied primarily to boutiques, grocery stores, and other sectors that experience higher traffic during weekends, particularly in the winter and summer tourist seasons.
