University of Cyprus (UCY) ranked among the top academic institutions in eight scientific fields, according to the Global Rankings of Academic Subjects for 2024 by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.
These are the fields of Automation & Control, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Psychology, Environmental Science & Engineering, Political Sciences, Physics, Computer Science & Engineering, Clinical Medicine.
A press release by UCY says that in August 2024, according to the Shanghai Global Ranking, the University of Cyprus was the only Cypriot university to be included in the overall list among the top 701-800 universities worldwide.
“The ranking by subject once again highlights the University of Cyprus’s effort to gain recognition in the international field of research and teaching in higher education. Excellence, quality teaching and impactful research are non-negotiable values for the country’s first public university,” the press release reads.
It adds that the ranking in the prestigious lists reflects the university’s enormous potential for international recognition and gives value to the organization in the matter of passing the necessary legislation that will allow the development of the institution, such as the possibility of offering foreign-language undergraduate study programs in foreign languages and the establishment and operation of university clinics.
The ranking of Universities is done in 5 scientific categories (sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences) and 55 scientific fields depending on their academic subject.
In order for a University to be included in the ranking by subject, it must have a minimum number of publications during the evaluation period. The threshold varies by scientific field and ranges from 25 (e.g. aerospace engineering, communications, public administration, etc.) to 200 publications (e.g. physics, biology, chemistry, clinical medicine, etc.).
The Global Rankings of Academic Subjects is based on four main factors, which evaluate the academic and research performance of universities. These are the Quality and Quantity of Publications, International Influence and Recognition, Awards and Distinctions, and World-Class Researchers and Research Excellence.
The analysis of publications is based on a model of assigning values and weighting to indicators, so as to calculate the weighted average for each subject and each University separately.
