The Theopetra Cave and Museum in the Municipality of Meteora are emerging as major tourism attractions, with visitor numbers rising steadily each month, according to local authorities and the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology and Speleology.

More than 23,500 visitors toured the cave and museum between April 2025 and the end of that year, while visitor numbers exceeded 3,000 in April 2026 alone, highlighting the area’s growing appeal as a cultural tourism destination.

“The Theopetra Cave and Museum are an invaluable archaeological and cultural treasure, not only for the Municipality of Meteora but for the entire country,” Meteora Mayor Lefteris Avramopoulos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA).

“The continued rise in visitor numbers confirms that Theopetra is becoming a major hub for cultural tourism and knowledge,” he said.

Located along the road from Trikala to Kalambaka, about three kilometres before the town of Kalambaka, Theopetra Cave sits at an altitude of around 300 metres above sea level and about 100 metres above the surrounding plain, on the northern side of a limestone formation overlooking the area of Theopetra.

The cave covers an area of approximately 500 square metres. Its arched entrance, measuring 17 metres in width and three metres in height, allows abundant natural light to reach the interior. Visitors can see the rock formations and monasteries of Meteora.
