The Supreme Defence Council on Friday voiced grave concern over the crisis scenario in the Middle East amid the Iran war.
“Grave concern” was expressed by the Council, chaired by President Sergio Mattarella, over “the crisis scenario resulting from the new war underway following the military action of the United States and Israel against Iran.” This was stated in the final document of today’s meeting, which analyzed “the serious destabilizing effects this crisis is having on the entire Middle East and Mediterranean region.”
The Council also “noted with concern that the crisis in the international order, centred on the UN, with the multiplication of unilateral initiatives, weakens the multilateral system even in the face of common challenges such as the real security concerns linked to the risk of Iran developing nuclear weapons, those relating to the security of Israel and its citizens, and the condemnation of the Tehran regime and its inhumane repression.”
Mattarella, Premier Giorgia Meloni, several senior ministers and Italy’s defence and security chiefs took part in the meeting of the Supreme Defence Council at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, the head of State’s residence, to discuss the Iran war.
Mattarella convened the meeting on Monday to analyse the international situation and the effects of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
An Iranian-made drone hit an Italian military base at Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan Wednesday night causing some damage but no injuries and leading Italy to speed the planned temporary evacuation of the base.
