Srebrenica Memorial Center reopens for staff under heightened security measures

SREBRENICA, March 18 (FENA) – In line with current security assessments and implemented protective measures, the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center held a meeting with employees and associates to review the current situation and the possibility of ending the institution’s temporary closure. Based on information received from relevant institutions and the Office of the High Representative (OHR), a decision was made to allow employees to return to work.

“During the meeting, we jointly analyzed the current situation and all relevant information, including security assurances received from competent institutions, protection measures taken by the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies of Bosnia and Herzegovina (DKPT BiH) and the EUFOR mission, as well as feedback from the Memorial Center’s employees and associates.

I would like to thank the Director of DKPT BiH, Chief General Inspector of Police Enes Karić, for the measures taken. DKPT has been and remains crucial for the operation of the Memorial Center. Additionally, we have received assurances from the High Representative that he is ready to take all necessary measures to ensure the continued operation of the institution,” said Emir Suljagić, Director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

Additional security measures include an increased presence of DKPT BiH officers and enhanced monitoring around the Memorial Center, additional technical protection measures, controlled access for all visitors and staff, and close cooperation with EUFOR, among other security steps.

“My primary responsibility, both legally and morally, is to the people who work at the Srebrenica Memorial Center and the community in which they live. It must be clear to everyone that we are resuming work under extraordinary conditions and a special security regime. State institutions in this part of the country operate under complete legal uncertainty, which will continue to affect our work. For this reason, among others, the Center will still not be open for joint and collective visits,” Suljagić stated.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center remains committed to its mission of preserving the truth and memory of the genocide victims while ensuring the highest security standards for all those who come to pay their respects. The public will be promptly informed of the meeting’s outcome and further steps.

“I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has shown solidarity with the Memorial Center. Our friends and allies continue to stand with us and closely monitor developments. Once we assess the situation this week, we will strive to ensure that the institution reopens for collective visits before the end of the month,” Suljagić concluded.
