Siberian Chiffchaff, a new species for Albania in Orikum’s reedbeds

TIRANA, November 15/ATA/ During the recent days, in Orikum, there was seen a Siberian Chiffchaff.

The Orikum Ornithological Station gave the wonderful news that its teams recorded yesterday the Siberian Chiffchaff in their ringing station. This is yet again a new species for Albania, caught in the Orikum’s reedbeds.

This warbler is becoming an increasingly frequent visitor in Europe. Our Siberian Chiffchaff found in Orikum a few days ago seems to have traveled a very long distance of roughly 3,300 to 8,300 kilometers.

“Sightings such as this one highlight the crucial role that habitats such as the Orikum reedbeds play for birds. By providing essential stopover sites for migratory species, these habitats offer refuge and resources that support bird populations from distant breeding grounds. Bird ringing allows us to document species that might otherwise go undetected. Also, through ringing efforts, we gain invaluable insights into migration patterns, population dynamics and the health of these ecosystems”, is read on the web-page of the Ornithological Station.

So far, the Orikum Ornithological Station, run by Albanian and Hungarian ornithologists since 2019 as a long-term monitoring project, has brought to light 4 new species for Albania.
