Nicolas Schmit, the lead candidate of the Party of European Socialists (PES) for next month’s EU elections, said Thursday that he is not in favour of former ECB President and former Italian premier Mario Draghi becoming the next European Commission President.
“It would mean not respecting the system,” Schmit told the news agencies involved in the European Newsroom, including ANSA.
That said, Schmit conceded that “there could be the problem that no one (among the Commission president candidates) manages to obtain a majority in parliament.
“In the end, it’s the parliament that decides,” he said.
