Sattler: Montenegro must take the key final steps towards EU membership on its own

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro has made significant progress on its EU path, but the key final steps towards membership must be taken by the country itself, said EU Ambassador in Podgorica Johann Sattler, adding that now was the time for unity, focus and broad political support to complete the commitments from the accession process.

Sattler announced that with Prime Minister Milojko Spajic and Irish Ambassador Kevin Colgan, representing the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU, he hosted on Wednesday delegates from EU Member States, representing the Council Working Party on Enlargement (COELA) and the working group preparing Montenegro’s EU Accession Treaty.

In a post on the X social network, Sattler pointed out that the presence of representatives of the two working groups in Montenegro was a strong message of their commitment to Montenegro’s EU membership and to successful completion of the accession process.

“Europe strongly supports Montenegro and is closely following its progress. The EU and its Member States are ready to support Montenegro in the final steps towards accession. But the key final steps must be taken by Montenegro itself”, said Sattler.

He added that it was time for unity, including swift fulfilling the key rule of law commitments in the Parliament.

“Now is the time for unity and focus, with broad political support to complete the work ahead”, Sattler wrote.
