Pupils from FIRST Carol Generation of Iasi win important robotics competition in Hong Kong
Pupils from the FIRST Carol Generation team, from the CaroLIIS robotics club of Carol I FIRST primary school, won the Lego League Championship Asia Open competition – Masterpiece season, Explore category, held recently in Hong Kong.
The pupils aged between 8 and 10 were awarded prizes on Friday by the mayor of Iasi, Mihai Chirica, in the presence of their parents and mentors.
The Iasi pupils are the only ones who represented Romania at the competition that took place in Hong Kong from August 2 to 4, which brought together 240 teams from around the world.
The principal of the Carol I primary school, Claudia Carausu, the coordinator of the CaroLIIS robotics club, said that this competition is a festival – contest dedicated to children and young people, which aims to introduce them to STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, ed. n., through a creative, sporting and artistic approach.
“The children mobilized very well and our project was not necessarily big but full of essence. Our advantage was that our students thought that there are other kinds of children, the special children. They created a point in their model for children with disabilities, they thought about children who can’t walk, children who can’t see and created a reading point with Braille, children who can’t hear – and they used color sensors, I think that fact excited. Then they created all the art forms that spin, that use light and color sensors. They were assessed at least three times,” Claudia Carausu.
In the FIRST Carol Generation team, each pupil has a well-defined role. It is formed by the students Sofia Bodoga (designer), Ilinca Carausu (designer), Darius Chifan (engineer), Luca Toma (engineer), Robin Hirtopanu (programmer) and Tudor Gherasim (programmer) and is coordinated, as mentors, by Victor Tcaciuc, recent graduate of the Grigore Moisil Informatics High School and member of the CyLiis Robotics Club, and by Claudia Carausu, principal of the Carol I primary school.
