The President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides expressed on Monday his readiness for a trilateral meeting with the UN Secretary General and the Turkish Cypriot leader in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, during his arrival at the Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol, where he is visiting on the occasion of the start of the new academic year.
Asked about the possibility of a trilateral meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar during his stay in New York for the upcoming UN General Assembly, the President said he has been approached by the UN for different dates and has responded positively to all of them, expressing his readiness to meet the Turkish Cypriot leader, and is awaiting further information.
“I have been approached for specific dates on 2-3 occasions and I have responded positively,” he noted.
Asked about the reactions in the Turkish-occupied areas caused by the inclusion of the series “Famagusta” on Netflix and the threats made by Tatar and other parties, President Christodoulides said that obviously they have not watched the series, adding that apart from recording the truth and the undeniable fact of the 1974 Turkish invasion, the broadcast sends very important messages to those who have happened to watch it.
“I have watched it, it sends very important messages about the need to resolve the Cyprus problem and the relations between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots,” he concluded.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
