The resident population of Italy is set to fall from 59 million on January 1, 2022 to 58.1 million in 2030, 54.4 million in 2050 and 45.8 million in 2080, ISTAT said on Thursday.
The national statistics institute also said that while the number of families is actually growing, the average number of members is set to fall from 2.32 in 2022 to 2.13 in 2042.
In the same year, 9.8 million people are expected to be living on their own, compared to 8.4 million in 2022, according to ISTAT.
