PM Mitsotakis: The Fund we present will make it easier for our islands to make the green transition a reality

“It is a great joy and a happy moment that we are on this beautiful island, in front of the unique landmark of Naxos, to announce the signing of an important financial instrument for our islands,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday, at the signing ceremony of the contract for the establishment of the Island Decarbonisation Fund.
The premier said that insularity requires special care from the state and that the government has proven that it is close to the islanders. “We are changing and making the lives of the islanders better. The Fund we are presenting will help our islands put the green transition into action. The funds will help us link the islands with the electricity network on the Greek mainland,” he added.

Mitsotakis said that this was of great importance for the country’s overall national strategy to turn sun and wind energy into a national advantage. “I watch with concern as extreme parties engage in rhetoric opposing renewable energy sources. It’s a completely flawed logic. RES will allow the country to gain energy autonomy and will contribute to the reduction of energy costs,” underlined the prime minister.

“We want to use this tool so that even entrepreneurs with small photovoltaic systems can cover production needs,” he added.

Mitsotakis underlined that “all this anti-renewable energy rhetoric is dangerous and unpatriotic because it is unpatriotic to import natural gas and oil when we can take advantage of the domestic sources of energy that God has so generously given us.”
